After embracing gray hair for nearly a decade, I stared dyeing my gray hair blonde.
Here’s what I learned in the process.
Like so many women, my hair was (and still is) animportant part of my identity.

During college, I sported an 80s perm that could fill a room.
Pregnant with my first child, I continued to get the chemical treatment, even against my doctors orders.
After my daughter was born, I never needed another perm as my hair retained the curls.

At 50, I decided to ditch the dye and go gray.
The first, which was developed by celebrity colorist Jack Martin, involves making the shift all at once.
I prefer to soften the demarcation line and go from there, she says I lighten in stages.

I also add lowlights so that over time these colors blend with the gray as the hair grows out.
Also, having dimension creates the illusion of fuller hair.
Longing for the golden look I had years ago, I recently dyed my hair a pearly-champagne color.

Going gray is a personal choice, and for so many people, it works.
